Concerned about Coronavirus?? Start with Self-Care! Part - 1

By now, most of us have heard about the Novel Coronavirus/COVID-19, an apparent new viral strain which is reportedly spreading fast.

Whilst the main risks appear to be to those who are vulnerable, such as the elderly, infirm, or those with pre-existing lung conditions, it's always beneficial to support our natural defences so they can do their job and protect us when needed.  As with other viral infections, antibiotics are only effective when treating secondary bacterial infections, so why not take a look at my blogs on natural self-care tips and have a go at supporting your own system.

Part 1 -
  Handy Hygiene!

Most enveloped viruses have a lipid layer protecting them, which is what helps them to get into your system and manage to replicate.  As we all know with our dirty dishes, soap is the best way through anything fatty, but if you're away from good old soap and water, why not make your own hand sanitiser using the following -

   Base ingredients:
     - Witch Hazel (Hamamelis virginiana)
     - Aloe Vera gel - lovely if you can get it fresh from your own mature plants if you have      them!
Mix at a ratio of 1 part Witch Hazel to 2 parts Aloe Gel
     - Few drops of Tea Tree Oil (Melaleuca alternifolia)

Aroma and antimicrobial/antiviral/antibacterial properties (depending on which herb used)
     - Few drops of essential oils such as Thyme (Thymus vulgaris), Sage (Salvia      officinalis), Lemon balm (Melissa officinalis), Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis)

You don't need to use each of the essential oils listed above if you don't want to, so if you don't like the smell of certain herbs or prefer one or two out of the list over the others then just go with those......it's all in your hands!

- Please note that you can add an alcohol content to any mixes, but they need to be a minimum 60% alcohol abv
